First Impressions Matter

The topic of 1st impressions is my thing. I could talk about THIS more than anything else I do.

It’s so much a part of me that when I enter any brick-and-mortar business, it’s what I notice  first. What is my FIRST impression of this business? What’s the vibe and atmosphere, was I  greeted quickly, was it clean, was it safe, was it friendly??

When I encounter an online business or online business owner, I notice if that business is  professional, warm/friendly, and easy to navigate.

Because of the online world shrinking our attention spans, it now takes less than 5 seconds for  us to create an idea about someone we meet or see online, for the first time. Often, it’s less  than 5 seconds, more like 3!

Think about seeing photos of doctors and dentists when you’re looking for a new one. How  long do you look at that photo before you decide if they’re someone you could possibly like,  know or trust? About 3 seconds. Based on a picture alone. If they have a stern face, would you  want them drilling in your teeth? Probably not!

Here are 3 simple strategies to make great first impressions IN person and ONLINE:

1. Smile! A real smile, not forced. People have good bs meters and can tell when your smile  is an obligation. Whether it’s in your headshot or meeting someone for the first time,  immediately tell yourself “this person matters” and acknowledge them with your best.

2. Be the FIRST to greet, both in person and online. This automatically puts you in a position  of being confident, friendly and professional. By the way, no selling in a greeting. That’s the #1  way to ruin a good first impression.

3. Look the part. Who ARE you? What are you known for and are you dressed for it? Your  verbal and non-verbal messages should be in alignment so there’s no confusion on first  impressions. If you’re a hairstylist and your hair is a mess, not a good look!

There is so much more you can do to boost a first impression but begin with these. They will  lead people to want to know more and that’s how we grow our business.
